Pet ownership is a huge responsibility, and unfortunately, many people do not realize this till much later down the road.
Before you adopt, ensure that you have weighed all your pros & cons, and ask yourself the "7 Golden Questions" and whether you have what it takes to carry out responsible pet ownership.
Owning a pet is a rewarding experience that comes with a significant responsibility.
If you are considering taking the leap to pet ownership, it’s important to reflect on what it truly takes to be a responsible pawrent.
By adhering to these ten commandments, you'll ensure that your pet leads a healthy, happy, and fulfilling life as your companion.
1. Commitment
Owning a pet is a long-term commitment. Cats & Dogs can live for more than a decade, and pets like birds or turtles can live even longer. Ensure you’re ready to commit to the entire lifespan of the pet you choose, which will see you through various life stages.
2. Research
In today’s digital age, information is at your fingertips. I once had a client who had no clue that cats can purr!
There is NO Excuse to bring a pet into your home before doing your own research. This includes understanding basic temperament, dietary requirements, behavior & potential health issues. Different pets have different needs, and it's vital to be well-prepared.
3. Regular Veterinary Care
Responsible pet ownership involves regular visits to the vet. This includes routine check-ups, vaccinations, and prompt medical care when your pet is sick or injured. Preventative care is key to a long, healthy life. Veterinary Care is also very expensive so ensure that you are able to budget & plan ahead, instead of “cross that bridge when you get to it”.
4. Proper Nutrition
Feeding your pet a complete & balanced diet is crucial. Research or consult with a vet to find the best food for your pet’s age, size & health needs. Cats are obligate carnivores, which means that they need meat as a staple diet. Avoid overfeeding, or feeding diets full of sodium & fillers, which can lead to obesity & health problems.
5. Sterilization
Sterilizing your pet prevents unwanted litters & can help reduce the number of homeless animals. It also has health benefits for your pet, including reducing the risk of certain cancers.
6. Training & Socialization
Proper socialization from young can prevent fearfulness & aggression. Dogs benefit from obedience training & basic commands can keep your pet safe. You should never ever strike or harm any animal, but deploy positive reinforcement methods instead.
7. Play & Exercise
All pets need exercise to stay healthy & happy. The amount and type will vary with the species, breed & age of your pet. Contrary to popular belief, cats need to be played with regularly to keep them entertained & allow them to expel their energy & predatory behavior. Regular playtime & walks for dogs is essential for health & mental wellbeing.
8. Safety
Cats must be kept indoors in a cat proofed home (max 1.5 to 2 inches grilles, depending on size of cat). Even dogs need to be kept safe by using leashes or secure fences. When outdoors, always have your pet wear identification & microchip them for added security. Keep your pets away from your neighbours’ houses & do not cause disamenities to others.
9. Grooming
Regular grooming keeps your pet neat, clean & comfortable, and it’s a good way to check for any signs of health issues. Nails must be trimmed regularly to prevent ingrown nails, and dental care & brushing are not to be neglected. Grooming also helps to build a bond between pets & owners.
10. Love & Attention
Perhaps the most crucial aspect of responsible pet ownership is providing your pet with consistent love & attention. Pets are not part of the furniture, they are family members who need social & emotional interaction.
